The time to begin teaching your son about his boy anatomy is when he is 5-7-years-old. Little boys are very curious when they are young and so it’s fun to teach them.
You might want to begin with the most basic information. Teach him about sperm would be a great place to start.
- So that he can understand where sperm are made, he should learn that there are two testicles located inside a sack of skin called the scrotum.
- Sperm are made in the testicles.
- Sperm are very tiny and can only be seen with a microscope.
- Sperm have three parts: head, middle, tail
Without giving him too much detail, simply explain that sperm help make babies. Resist the temptation to go beyond that basic concept because he is not ready for all the details just yet. We still have a few years before he enters puberty, and we can add to this detail when his brain and reproductive system have developed a little more. In this age group, his testicles have not even started making sperm yet. We are simply focused on the anatomy for now.
To help guide you as you teach your son, I have written lots of 7-Minute Chats for boys in this age group. These are small bits of information written as questions. It should not take longer than 7 minutes for each chat and my encouragement to you is to make it fun!
If you purchase the book, I’m a Boy, Special Me, from Amazon and then download the 7-Minute Chats that go along with the book. Here is an example of one chat that you could use for the content in this blog.
The 7-Minute Chats help you review the important concepts with your son. But, I think they have an even greater purpose in this age-group. We want to start a happy pattern of tiny talks that you will continue for the next several years. If they are fun and very short, he will look forward to this special time with you.
Always remember, I’m on your team! We both have the same purpose, making sure your son is informed with accurate information through these important transitional years in his life.
