Two Simple Concepts to Teach Your Daughter to Prepare Her for Puberty

August 13, 2019 by Dr. Shelley Metten Leave a Comment

If your daughter is 8-9-years old, make sure she knows these two important pieces of information about her body as she approaches puberty.

Her Brain: Explain that there is a lot going on in her brain right now. It is experiencing a big development time and she will notice changes in the way she thinks and feels about herself and others. You have both likely noticed a change in her emotions. It is helpful for her to know that the changes in her emotions and thinking are normal and all girls experience them.

Ovaries: The ovaries are the important parts of her anatomy at the beginning of puberty. There are two ovaries and they have been very quiet until now. They have been protecting very special eggs that one day can become a baby. As puberty begins, the brain is going to direct the ovaries to start making hormones. Hormones travel in the blood and wake up the rest of your girl anatomy. This anatomy figure from my books (above), can help her to understand where the ovaries are in her body.

This special time with your daughter is best if it is brief and fun. One time together builds on the next and helps to set a wonderful communication between the two of you about these personal topics. Treasure them.
